Every parent knows the sudden wave of worry that hits when your child wakes up crying, warm to the touch, in the middle of a rainy night. As the rainy season sets in across the Philippines, sudden fevers, wet coughs, and sniffles become an everyday anxiety for families.

It may be normal for you to get worried about their well-being; remember that a fever is not a sickness on its own. However, what you’re witnessing is the body’s defense mechanism doing its best to protect your child from harm. This increased temperature simply shows that your child’s immune system is fighting the virus within. To help you get through this monsoon season without worries, our group of pediatricians and certified medical doctors has made this easy checklist for you.

1. The Common Cold vs. Influenza (The Flu)
While both are respiratory viruses that spike during the rainy season, they demand different amounts of attention.
The Common Cold: The symptoms come on slowly. Your child will experience low-grade fever, stuffiness or runniness of the nose, sneezing, and coughing. What is most important, however, is that they remain energetic and hungry.
The Influenza Virus (“Flu”): Comes fast and fierce. This leads to high fever (often above 38.5°C), strong pains all over the body, chills, exhaustion, and dry coughing that affects their sleeping pattern.

2. Dengue Fever (A Seasonal Priority)
Dengue cases naturally rise during the rainy season due to standing water where mosquitoes breed. Spotting it early is critical.
● Key Symptoms: A sudden, high fever that lasts anywhere from 2 to 7 days. Unlike the common cold, Dengue has its own distinctive feature where the sufferer has severe eye pains, muscle/joint pain, headaches, nausea, and even red spots on the skin.
● The Warning Phase: There is a very important period of time just after the fever starts decreasing. When the child becomes weak or vomits constantly, gets abdominal pain, or bleeds (like nose bleed), you should go and see a doctor immediately.

3. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) & Asthma Flare-ups
The sudden drop in temperature and damp air can easily irritate sensitive airways, leading to breathing difficulties.
● Key Symptoms: A fever accompanied by rapid breathing, wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing out), or a tight, persistent cough.
The Fever Timeline: What to Expect
Understanding the typical cycle of a viral fever can help ease your mind day-by-day:
● Days 1-2 (Peak): The fever may rise often due to the active immune system. Concentrate on monitoring the fever, hydration, and weight-based paracetamol as pain relievers.
● Day 3 (The Turning Point): This day marks the breaking point for most regular fevers, as there will now be longer periods between fevers. However, if the fever does not show signs of breaking by the end of Day 3, you must consult with a doctor immediately.
● Day 4 Onwards (The Recovery Period): There should no longer be any fever, although a slight cough or running nose may remain for another few days.

Why an Early Medical Checkup Brings Peace of Mind

While monitoring your child at home is certainly a great start, seeing a fever rise fast can be quite challenging. Coming in for a professional evaluation eliminates all the pressure of assumptions. Through early intervention, we get to:
● Identify any Complications Early: We go beyond appearances to differentiate between simple rainy season colds and more vigorous viruses to ensure that complications don’t set in at all.
● Perform Quick Laboratory Tests: No more stressing about having to wait for results. If required, we can quickly conduct simple tests such as complete blood counts to instantly exclude the possibility of Dengue or bacterial infections.
● Design an Exact Treatment Plan: Rather than being concerned whether you are giving your child too much or too little medication, you will be leaving with a very exact dosage plan.
